"Why What's Called Health Insurance, Isn't"

How many Americans have proper health insurance? The latest figures from March of 2014claim that 13.1% of Americans are without health insurance. But in fact, very few Americans have health insurance... because what people call health insurance really isn't insurance at all. To solve the challenges we face in healthcare, we must be clear in our concepts and definitions. The failure to understand what is and ins't insurance is a major, if not the major reason we are failing to get a handle on spiraling health care costs. If you are concerned about the state of healthcare - not just in the US but throughout the world - you first need to understand insurance: what it is and what it isn't,  and thus what it can and can't do toward achieving meaningful access to quality medical care.

Until we fully understand what is and isn't insurance, healthcare costs can not be controlled by anything short of full rationing. Come find out why.

Dr. Todd Fredricks is a Primary Care physician from Ohio University. His talk will cover the current state of the PPACA with regard to impending legal challenge, the state of medicine as practiced by new physicians, and the current changes that physicians are making to try and reestablish personal freedom in practice.

Are subsidies distributed through federal health insurance exchanges legal, or not? This is the question posed by King v. Burwell, scheduled for oral argument before the US supreme Court on March 4th with a ruling expected by June, 2015.

What is being deliberated, and why? How likely is it that the subsidies will be found illegal, and what would that mean for Oregon and Washington?

Just six days before the case is to be heard, you have the opportunity to learn the details from Michael Cannon, considered by some to be the "intellectual father" of the strategy behind this legal challenge. He will discuss the case, what is at stake in Oregon and Washington — and for the ACA in general — as well as present his thoughts on how Congress should reform healthcare.

Dr. Marion Mass, of Jellinek Pediatrics and a member of BRI's Speakers Bureau will speak to us on preserving the doctor-patient relationship in an era of increasing regulation. Refreshments will be served.
