Journal Club is a monthly meeting on a Wednesday (the week of the month will vary, so keep checking this calendar!), where students sign up to present an article or research piece to share with the group. We always serve great lunches, and RSVPs are appreciated.

Last year, over 400 students attended MCW's Journal Club over the academic year 2014-2015, and this year we hope to reach more students. We discuss medical innovation, technology, ethics, policy and anything that is interesting to us MCW students.

We will be serving snacks and soft drinks, and will discuss BRI's mission to promote solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means of delivering quality medical care.

We will also use this as an opportunity to invite interested students to run as BRI Officers, or volunteer, and what events we would be interested in holding for the remainder of the academic year.

At least according to Dr. Robert F. Graboyes. Dr. Graboyes is a Senior Research Fellow at the Mercatus Institute at George Mason University. BRI-Georgetown is very happy to welcome Dr. Graboyes back for a repeat delivery of his very insightful, much requested healthcare innovation lecture, "Fortress & Frontiers." Dr. Graboyes will discuss what NEEDS to be done from a policy perspective to open up markets, which allow healthcare innovators to DECREASE COSTS and INCREASE ACCESS for all patients.

Please join us for an enlightening lecture by Dr. Jonathan Schmidt from Priority Physicians. Dr. Schmidt will discuss Direct Primary Care, Concierge medicine, and a hybrid schmidt1model. He will further explain how insurance, medicare, medicaid, and RVUs work as well. This will be an informal lecture with lots of time for questions.

Dr. Jonathan P. Schmidt is a board certified physician in family medicine. He received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University and went on to the University of Illinois where he received his doctor of medicine degree. Upon graduation, Dr. Schmidt moved to South Bend, IN, where he completed his family medicine residency at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident in his final year.

Dr. Schmidt sought out experience in direct practice medicine during his residency and is excited to be practicing in a way that allows him to put the needs of his patients first. In his free time, Dr. Schmidt enjoys spending time with his wife Cristal, son Kiptyn and daughter Kenley. He also enjoys being outdoors and participating in water sport activities.

All are welcome to attend a lecture presentation on healthcare policy and the future, by Dr. Todd Fredricks, family practitioner and Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at OUHCOM since 2012. Dr. Fredricks has been a long-time advocate of what it takes personally, and pro-actively in healthcare policy, to be a great doctor. He has been a long-time BRI supporter, and was a featured speaker at BRI's Leadership Conference in 2014 in Denver, CO.

Dr. Josh Umbehr, AtlasMDALL are welcome to attend this evening presentation. Dr. Josh Umbehr from Wichita, Kansas will be in DC this Friday, Nov. 6, to speak about his creative — and increasingly spreading — approach to addressing the pressing issues of the need for medical practice innovation, patient advocacy, and workable healthcare solutions. "Dr. Josh" began AtlasMD, a direct-primary care practice, in which patients pay a modest monthly fee and in return have nearly unlimited access to primary care. This model allows doctors to have fewer patients than average, meaning more time for doctors and patients to interact. He will speak to why Direct Primary care may be the answer to better healthcare in the US.

There will be a mixer following at Mission in Dupont.
