POST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty students and faculty joined us for “Star Trek Bioethics.” After we watched an episode of Star Trek: Voyager – Season 7 – “Critical Care,” Dr. Eberl (MU-COM’s ethics professor) opened a discussion about the bioethical issue pertaining to the episode. The episode dealt with the topic of government controlled healthcare, particularly how the need for cost effectiveness and utility of each patient to society limited who got care and who didn’t.
It was an interesting discussion of why it is important to have a diverse medical market so that everyone can get the healthcare they want. We learned about the dangers of a federally operated healthcare system and the need for less government influence. We also talked about the social implication of providing healthcare to everyone and how it is not a right but a privilege.
