On Wednesday, March 22nd, the Benjamin Rush Institute hosted a lunch talk for 42 students with Dr. Mark Niedfeldt. An alumnus and previous MCW faculty member, Dr. Niedfeldt now owns a solo direct medical care (often called Direct Primary Care) clinic which offers patients unprecedented access to the physician and a higher level of personal attention. We heard him speak about his practice and how he offers high quality doctor-patient relationships in a cost-effective way.
After beginning with a description of the modern medical field and why costs are frequently higher than desired, he went through a list of “problems.” E.g. big pharma, salaries, hospital administrators… etc. He ended by describing his current practice and laying out reasons for why he left his old setting in academia.
Overall, the event was well accepted and multiple students sought him out after the talk to ask specific questions.
“This event was well timed given recent/ongoing debates on the national level regarding health care. The speaker was well prepared and persuasive.” ~Benjamin Stultz, treasurer, BRI-MCW
