Chicago Medical School @ RFUMS — LECTURE: The Effects of Healthcare Policy on the Patient-Provider Relationship

Chicago Medical School, Rm. L.362, East Pod 3333 Green Bay Rd, North Chicago, IL, United States

Dr. David Ansell is an Internal Medicine physician and the Chief Medical Officer at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. His work with others on the problem of patient dumping brought national attention to this issue and resulted in landmark national legislation to end this practice. In 1995, Dr. Ansell moved to Chicago's Sinai Health System, the State of Illinois’ largest private provider of indigent care and one of the foremost safety-net health systems in the U.S., as the Chairperson of Internal Medicine. At Sinai, he was responsible for the creation of the Sinai Urban Health Institute, which has become one of the nation’s leading centers for research and interventions to understand and eliminate health inequities. Dr. David Ansell on healthcare policy and the patient-provider relationship

Join the Chicago Medical School BRI chapter for a lunch lecture with David A. Ansell, MD, MPH. Dr. Ansell draws upon his considerable experience in urban healthcare to illustrate the ways in which US health policy affects the relationship healthcare providers have with their patients. His talk will hopefully open the eyes of future healthcare providers to the problems facing our health system today, and provide them a base from which they can find their own voice in addressing those issues as their careers progress.

From the film's website:
"The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed, in some cases even catastrophic, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries, Poverty, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore."

ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians

Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas NV 3667 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV, United States

Dr. Beth Haynes, BRI executive director, delivered a talk at ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians.

It is important that we undertake the task of engaging our future physicians. What are they learning about health policy? Given the state of higher education today, it's no surprise that health policy instruction at medical schools is government-centric. But what is surprising is how little formal policy instruction students receive, which presents a great opportunity to interject the voice of reason into the conversation. Benjamin Rush Institute is doing exactly that. In just the fall semester of 2016, we reached 1300 medical student5s. Come hear how we are presenting the ideas of individual rights and limited government in a way that even liberal medical students are wiling to consider these alternatives.

Day of Solidarity: Bringing awareness to the physician and medical student suicide epidemic

Imagine your excitement as a parent getting ready to attend your child's graduation from medical school. Instead, you attend his funeral--yet another medical student suicide victim. And statistics show no improvement even when a medical student becomes a doctor.

"Medical student and physician suicide is an epidemic. It is estimated that 400 doctors die by suicide in the United States each year. That's the equivalent of an entire medical school gone! The second leading cause of death among medical students is suicide--a well-known occupational hazard in medicine. Yet no medical organization is tracking these suicides. Why? And how can we solve a problem when it's hidden from us?"

Lacey Kohlmoos, an Online Organizing Strategist at Care2 Petitions and wife of a 4th year medical student, is championing National Day of Solidarity to Prevent Physician Suicide in Philadelphia on Saturday, August 20th to bring awareness to this dire situation.

The more awareness we raise, the more we can speak with one voice--a voice of solidarity--to find the root causes of physician and medical student suicide, and promote solutions to turn the tide.

Fulfilling a life's passion to care for others shouldn't mean personal suffering--or worse.
